Charles Manson was found unresponsive in his cell by deputies at the Corcoran State Prison in California. He was pronounced dead at 2:00 AM Friday morning after medics worked to revive the prisoner to no avail. The cause of death is currently unknown and impending autopsy results.
80-year-old Manson had been incarcerated since 1969 for his involvement in the Tate LaBianca murders which were carried out by a group his followers, The “Manson Family”, at his request. Manson was later convicted of the murders when prosecutors employed the “joint responsibility rule” which holds each member of a conspiracy accountable for the crimes of his or her co-conspirators.
Prior to the murders Manson had spent much of his life in and out of correctional institutions for various crimes. During his time outside of prison he was known as a drifter and an unemployed singer, songwriter who briefly spent some time trying to make his way into the Los Angeles music industry.
During the penalty phase of his trial, Manson had originally been sentenced to death. The ruling was automatically commuted to life imprisonment when a 1972 decision by the Supreme Court of California temporarily eliminated the state’s death penalty.
The public remained fascinated by the Manson Family murders even after the his conviction. Multiple high profile talk show hosts had made the commute to interview Manson throughout the 80’s. The Manson Family and the subsequent murders were also the subject of innumerable books over the years as well.
In recent years Manson made headlines after he announced his plans to marry. His hopes were dashed however when his engagement turned out to be nothing more than a charade by his would-be bride hoping to acquire ownership of Manson’s body which she in turn planned to display for financial gain. This has left some to speculate that Manson died of a broken heart.
Prison officials are preparing an official announcement in regards to Manson’s death which will be broadcast during a press conference later this evening.
